Ribbon Bar Theme Mixin

I’ve been exploring the ribbon bar theme mixin.  I’ve  been able to adjust most everything I want to but I’m having difficulty setting the icon position and relative text of the ribbon bar item button.  What I’d like to see is the icon specified with an image source (in code) and scaled properly to fit within a height/width of 32 x 32 followed by descriptive text.  The text appears to occult the icon and there is space at the bottom of the button that appears not be used.  I’ve tried setting margins/padding/etc. to no avail.  I’d rather the text just overlay the icon, not push the icon out of the button region. I’ve included a screenshot below.
